Agricultural models have historically overlooked the role of women in farm management. Addressing this gap is not only a matter of equity, but also an important step in strengthening the resilience of agri-food systems. 

Since 2019, the AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program has been implementing the Women Farm Managers project, an initiative focused on strengthening women’s leadership and promoting gender equality in coffee production. The project supports women in their role as decision-makers, encouraging them to manage their farms as business units. Through cost-analysis and improved crop management practices, it contributes to greater economic autonomy while supporting more productive and sustainable farms. 

The programme includes training workshops designed to build technical and managerial skills, covering topics such as gender equality, farm management, and the use of production records to support decision-making. In addition, exchange visits with other producers enable participants to share experiences, broaden perspectives, and explore new approaches to farm development. 

As part of these efforts, a workshop was held to mark International Women's Day in March of this year, bringing together participants to reflect on their progress and recognise their role in farm and household decision-making. The session highlighted how women’s leadership contributes to sustainability, innovation, and the well-being of their families and communities. 

During the discussions, participants shared ongoing challenges, including discrimination, limited support, and unequal opportunities within a traditionally male-dominated sector. At the same time, they highlighted tangible progress– taking on greater responsibility in farm management, contributing to household income, and making technical decisions related to crop varieties, nutrition, and production practices. 

This continued engagement is supporting a shift in perceptions and practices at farm level. By strengthening women’s capabilities and participation, the initiative contributes to more inclusive and resilient coffee systems, while creating pathways for long-term sector development.
